Guarding the Atlantean Ruins

Medium: Ink (Black and Sepia)

I hadn't done any plain ink work without intending to color it in a while. Figured I was about due

This was really more of an experiment than anything else. I bought a $10 set of sepia india ink pens just to try them out and see if I could come up with any interesting ink work with them. I ended up wanting to do a picture where the primary figures/creatures in the drawing were inked in black, and the background was done in sepia. This is what I came up with. A mermaid warrior riding some plesiosaur-like creature, guarding undersea ruins, which might as well be some special, sacred part of the sunken city of Atlantis.

I mostly like the way it came out, though I sort of wish I had done more with the background beyond the mountains/reef/rocks in the background. I wanted the mermaid/plesiosaur to stand out against the background so I just decided to do a wash of sepia... but it just looks unbalanced with all of the detail in the rest of the background. Oh well. I'll always find something I don't like about my artwork
